✍️PROJECT THOUGHTS✍️

Hey bloggers,

    A couple of thoughts about our project have been clouding my mind throughout this adventure. This project has me VERY excited about being able to convey my feelings in other ways other than my normal ways I vent my emotions. Being able to put my ideas to fruition has been so awesome, as I have never directed a film before. Filming has been quite difficult as none of us have been available on the same day to start the process. However, we have (thankfully) secured a date to start, which is this weekend.

    We haven't changed anything when it comes to our filming IDEAS, however, during filming things will probably change. This means we will probably tweak some scenes or add some new ones to enhance the viewing experience. Antwan has an EXTREMELY high quality camera, so we hope these scenes come out looking impeccable. To get the roles straight, Gallarde will be our actor, Antwan will be the cinematographer/editor, and I will be the director. All of our roles have been MADE CLEAR within our group to make this as easy as possible. 

👻SUPPORTING CHARACTERS👻

Supporting characters are crucial in films, even though they may not always seem like it. Supporting characters can convey multiple feelings and messages that can effect the way the viewer extracts information from the movie, while also playing an instrumental role in the protagonists' life. They also usually present their own goals, desires and motivations throughout the movie that could or could not be in line with that of the protagonist.

For our film, our supporting characters will reflect however the character is feeling. So whenever the character is feeling some sort of sadness or depression, our supporting characters will be feeling the same way. In addition, our supporting characters will be wearing light colored clothes during joyful scenes. In the contrary, during melancholy scenes, our supporting characters will wear darker shaded colored clothes. Our supporting characters will be HEAVILY involved in our film opening, as they will have a big influence on our protagonist.

⬛️COLOR IN YOUR PROJECT⬛️

Color is a ESSENTIAL when planning out a movie, as it can subtly imply or deliver a multitude of messages. Light colors, like yellow and green often convey moments of happiness, eccentric moments and/or dream moments. In contrast, dark colors, like dark and brown, can often depict moments of sadness, fear, and serious associations. Pastel hues are often used in romance, hazy lenses and period dramas. Additionally, dark colored clothes on characters often means that they are suffering with some sort of sadness, or it could mean a character is mysterious or ominous. Light colored clothes, in comparison, like red, pink and yellow, portray moments of passion, happiness, and delight.

In our movie specifically, we have opted towards more of a darker color scheme, with most scenes occurring at night time with darker colored clothes. We are attempting to evoke a melancholy mood, as our main character in the film will be suffering with depression and dealing with difficult personal matters. However, we did not want to make our film in COMPLETE dejection with no sort of happy scenes, because it is unrealistic. As a result, we will include at least one scene in the daylight that includes happy moments, with laughter and smiling.

👤MAIN CHARACTER ANALYSIS👤

As we are on the brink of recording our project, it is only right to take a deep dive into our main characters' role and characteristics. Our main character, Gallarde, has a bulky frame and is about 5'10. In our film, our main character will be wearing an all black outfit to reflect his mental state. However, we are heavily considering including a scene where our subject wears light colored clothes, as this scene will be filled with laughter and happiness. 

Our main character will have a pretty apathetic personality, as his life is filled with sadness. As stated many times, our character will be suffering with depression. Our main character will be very bland in their delivery and communication as they battle their own personal battles. Basketball plays a pivotal role in the characters life, and we will see a seen where he is missing his shots. This gives a hint to the viewer that his basketball career is struggling to pan out how he wants it to. Overall, our film opening will be mostly centered around sad moments, except a scene here and there of delightful moments.

🦸‍♂️COSTUMING🦸‍♂️

For our project, costuming is crucial as it touches on many aspects during scenes. Costuming is an excellent way to convey emotions and can hint at future events during a film. As it pertains to our project, we have decided to go with dark colored clothes. As our movie opening is quite sorrowful, we feel that dark colored clothes will accurately reflect the mood that we are implementing. 

We had Gallarde choose the dark colored clothes as he is our actor. He decided to choose a black Nike hoodie and joggers, with Jordan 3's/New Balances. As our project revolves around a young boy, we wanted the clothes to reflect his age. We want there to be at least one scene where our subject experiences some sort of happiness, in which we will probably make them wear light colored clothes, as it represents joyousness. 

🔜PREPARING TO FILM🔜

As we get ever so closer the beginning of our film production, it's time to evaluate the easy parts, while also analyzing some roadblocks that we might run into. To begin with, it will be pretty easy to decide our film dates as we will plan a day that all of us are free. We all have been assigned a clear role, so our process during film production will be as smooth as possible. Antwan and Gallarde are both extroverts, so getting them to perform certain scenes and acts will (hopefully) be pretty easy. Moving on, being on a limited budget is definitely a difficulty during film production. The amount of retakes to find the perfect clip will, in my opinion, be stressful and difficult to decide on. Lastly, finding the most fitting props for a scene will be quite difficult.

ACTORS:

For our project, Gallarde will be the one acting as the boy in our film, as I feel he most suited for this role. Antwan and I will be responsible for filming and editing.

LOCATIONS:

As of right now, filming will occur at our local park, one of each others house, and a basketball court.

SPECIFIC DATES AND TIMES:

After a group discussion, we have decided to start filming on February 4th. Some of our scenes will occur during the day, while others will occur at night.

SCRIPTS:

There isn't anything that we want our actor specifically to say, but we obviously want them to perform their best acting skills.

📖STORYBOARDING YOUR PROJECT📖

As we start to think about how our film opening will pan out, it's time to finally put our ideas to fruition. Multiple scenes have been thought out thoroughly as we have discussed what scenes fit and suit our project the best. We are eager to get this process of filming commenced, and we feel we have prepared to the best of our ability. Obviously there are still some scenes we need to create, but so far, these scenes are the ones we feel perfectly reflect our ideas for the project.

Starting off, we wanted to begin our film with a foreshadowing effect, as we show the grave of someone (the viewer doesn't know who) with black flowers surrounding it. It sets the tone for the movie, as its despairing plot starts with this scene. Moving on, we want the actors mental state to reflect his living situation, as his depression starts to consume his world. A messy room is a perfect way to determine how someone is fairing in life. Our third scene shows the boy, by himself, eating at the table. I feel this scene shows that his battle through depression has been filled with lonely moments, which is the case with most people who battle through low moments in life.

Someones physical appearance can severely impact their mental health, which is why we decided to include the fourth box. In this scene, the boy will be unhappy with his appearance, which piles onto his already concerning mental health. We wanted to show moments in which the boy feels genuine happiness, which, in this case, is playing basketball with his friends. Having a mostly dark film is not something we wanted as everyone as joyous moments in life. Lastly, we wanted to show the last moments of the boys life. Walking alone at night, living the last moments of his life. 

🕺FINAL PROJECT MOOD BOARD🕺

ANOTHER MOOD BOARD! In a past blog post, we were assigned to make a mood board about a movie that we enjoyed, and I chose Toy Story! Its jubilant, playful aesthetic made it so my mood board was filled with joyful moments throughout ones childhood. However, for my film opening, the mood board will be the complete opposite...

In relation to our melancholy film opening, it was only right to make a mood board to reflect that. So far, the general aesthetic will be dark, dimly lit places in order to portray the young teenagers mental state, in which he is battling depression. These photos of sadness, including the unhappy boy and funeral photos, are more examples of what feeling we are trying to convey, which is sadness. The clothes worn in the opening will mostly be dark clothes as they despair.

I chose this mood/feeling for my opening as I feel to many people are afraid of venting/displaying their emotions. Whether it is due to the fact that they don't want to be seen as weak, or they don't want other people worrying about them, it is never beneficial to hold in your emotions. Mental health amongst teenagers is a huge topic of discussion through our social world, so it is important to reach out when necessary. Do not suffer in silence.

🔔FINAL PROJECT IDEA🔔

As the days to commence our production starts to get ever so closer, it is time to decide what our final project is going be centered around. As mentioned in previous blog posts, many ideas have circulated between the three of us. However, it's time to pick one. Mental health is a huge topic of discussion in today's society, so it only felt right to make it our focal point in our project. 

Our project will be centered around a young boy, who appears to be happy on the outside, but is deeply struggling on the inside. Hiding our pain behind our smiles is extremely common, as we would rather deal with it ourselves than to inflict a feeling of sympathy on our loved ones. Later on the film, the young boy will have been pushed to his limits, and will end up ending his own life

The genre our project will lie under Drama, as we document a young boys downfall, suffering from depression. Drama tends to film the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. Also, our dramatic plot and turn of events will ultimately make the film opening fall under a Drama. In an attempt to separate ours from others, I wanted to touch on the reality of human life, specifically those who suffer with depression. Many people are frightened by speaking out about real world problems, and I felt it was only right to make my film on it.

📝TITLE SEQUENCE RESEARCH📝

Every movie has its own distinct features, with one of them being the title. Despite just a few words, titles hold a significant meaning as it (sort of) foreshadows what will happen in the movie. Each title has its own unique font, meaning, size and color that can convey a multitude of feelings, whether it be eerie, or upbeat. These websites were a perfect segue for my "movies for later" playlist as I discovered a plethora of new movies to watch.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 

Part of the ongoing animated Spider-Man trilogy, Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse pivots around the protagonist, Miles Morales, and his journey into becoming the Spider-Man in his world. As Miles is introduced to Peter Parker, he realizes that there are many others who share the same abilities as him, which allows him to battle the evil Kingpin who can open portals into other universes and pull different versions of Spider-Man into other worlds. The large, dark red font indicates a journey of conflict and love, as he finds his first love, Gwen. Red has been a staple color that has always been associated with Spider-Man. The title, Into the Spider Verse, perfectly describes the predicament in the movie, as Miles and the other Spiderman's discover the multiple dimensions that they can enter.

NANNY

Although psychological horror films have never been my cup of tea, this movie caught my eyes. Nanny (2022) is focuses on an African women who finds a job as a Nanny, hoping it will be able to bring her son to the United States. However, when a violent presence begins to invade both her dreams and reality, it threatens to destroy everything she's fought for. The white font in the title brings an eerie feeling as the forth letter appears to be dripping into her eye. Its slender, skinny text also provides this uncomfortable feeling of peace, which relates to the movie as the protagonist begins to have hallucinations.

INCREDIBLES 2 (2018)

In a two movie trilogy, Incredibles 2 follows the Parr family as they navigate a world that still outlaws superhero activities. Helen Parr (Elastigirl) takes on a new job to restore the public's faith in superheroes, leaving Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) to handle domestic challenges, including caring for their three children. The family must unite to face a new villain, the Screenslaver, whose mind-controlling technology poses a significant threat to both the Incredibles and society at large. The title, Incredibles, is the perfect description for what the family represents, which are people who were given sublime abilities which no ordinary human could do. 

🧠BRAINSTORMING🧠

    As we begin to enter the process of recording our movie opening, a decision has to be made on what it will be about. Numerous ideas have circulated between the three of us, including one centered around basketball, another about wandering around the city. We are leaning towards a video that will be centered around a day in the life of an unhappy individual who masks their feelings behind their smile. As of right now, this is our thought process, however, we may find an idea that is better or more convenient.

    In terms of genres, we had a pool to choices to choose from. We ended up narrowing the choices down to the ones that we felt best suited us and ones that we felt comfortable doing, which were comedy, drama and sports. Our first consideration for our film was comedy, as we felt/feel we have the perfect tools to make it as entertaining as possible. Antwan and Gallarde are very amusing people so it would be perfect. Comedies, in my opinion, bring out someones true personality and allows them to express themselves in a humorous way. Making the audience laugh is an intriguing thought as it may distract them from whatever is going on with them on a personal level. A con with comedies is finding the right people who will actually amuse the audience instead of instilling an awkward vibe throughout the movie.

    A drama is also an option that we are considering as we could document the struggles that someone could be going through. Drama’s are a great way to express a characters emotions in a melancholy way as the character experiences a tough period or moment in their life. Drama movies may also help the audience grow closer with their loved ones, which in turn may increase their happiness. The last one in the pool of options we have considered is sports. All though quite generic, the sports genre could be assembled into quite an entertaining opening. The bouncing crowd, the sounds of the grass playing soccer, the squeakiness of shoes on a basketball court, the sound of the bat hitting the ball. Many to choose from. However, as stated before, sports is quite generic so we might opt for another genre.
